Classmates, 1.)What does "Genie's" final outcome tell us about language (and emotional) development? After watching the video and going through our reading assignment, it is clear that early language progress and emotional development is strongly linked to how often parents interact with their children at an early age. The more a parent talks to an infant or toddler the faster the child develops their vocabulary and grammar skills. When we look at the Genie’s case, these things did not happen, but also there was severe abuse and neglect from birth throughout her early childhood. “Dr. Jay Shurley, a psychiatrist, said, "Solitary confinement is, diabolically, the most severe punishment, and in my experience, really quite dramatic symptoms develop in as little as 15 minutes to an hour, and certainly inside of two or three days. And try to expand this to10 years boggles one's mind" (James, 2008). Once she was rescued and awarded to the state she was still in diapers at the age of fourteen, but was the size of an eight year old. If we look at whathappened to Genie after she was rescued I would she became more of a science project than someone’s daughter. She was studied in a controlled environment, with researchers, teaching her and trying to develop her vocabulary, but there is so much more that goes into raising a child andthat is where I believe the psychologist and the people studying her went wrong. The Doctors working on her case may have had good intention, but forgot this was a girl who was severely neglected, not just deprived of social and language development, but also emotional development. What this girl really needed was love and unconditional love not to be studied. When the research part shut down Genie went through several foster parents, some of which were members of the research team all failed to be able to undo the trauma this little girl went through in fact her last foster parent caused her to completely regress. The parent punished her for vomiting which caused her to regress back to only using sign language. So when it comes to
