1 Mr. Loren Schwarzwalter Comm 110 Section 14, Speaker 11 1/31/05 Speech Communities Assignment For this assignment I interviewed a friend I met in my dormitory, his name is Mike Johnson. The reason I chose to interview him is because he is involved in intramural hockey here at UND and I know little to nothing about hockey. I always go to him when I am unfamiliar with a penalty in hockey, or any other hockey related questions. Mike has been playing hockey since he was ten years old. There are many unique characteristics that make intramural hockey a speech community. The definition of a speech community is “where communication is shared within a particular association of people that is unique and has meaning definable only by its members. A speech community is not a “group.” One characteristic that makes Mike’s intramural hockey team unique are the uniforms that they wear for there games. They are nothing special but they all are the same and they represent their team.
