1 Mr. Loren Schwarzwalter Comm 110 Section 14, Speaker 11 1/31/05 Speech Communities Assignment For this assignment I interviewed a friend I met in my dormitory, his name is Mike Johnson. The reason I chose to interview him is because he is involved in intramural hockey here at UND and I know little to nothing about hockey. I always go to him when I am unfamiliar with a penalty in hockey, or any other hockey related questions. Mike has been playing hockey since he was ten years old. There are many unique characteristics that make intramural hockey a speech community. The definition of a speech community is “where communication is shared within a particular association of people that is unique and has meaning definable only by its members. A speech community is not a “group.” One characteristic that makes Mike’s intramural hockey team unique are the uniforms that they wear for there games.
