SOC 101 Notes 4/25/06 Social Change: Where Do We Go From Here? I. Some basic principles of social change A. Social change is universal B. Social change is accelerating- we can’t picture the future today i. Change is the normal state of things C. Social change is controversial- religious fundamentalism is a response II. Using Sociology to predict future trends A. Why it’s hard to predict human behavior i. Complexity- how people act and why? ii. Nonlinearity- we don’t behave in straight lines iii. Irrationality B. Prediction: Environmental Damage i. Awareness 1. Invisibility- impacts of many forms of environmental damage are invisible to our sight, don’t see the ozone hole 2. Lag time- many of these things happened 30 years ago 3. Incrementalism: “Boiling the frog”- if we could have seen everything that had happened to the environment in the last 50 years in 1950, it would be shocking, but it all happened gradually ii. Tragedy of the Commons (Hardin) Everyone acting in their own interest destroys the public good
