Hurd Communication 2110 October 21, 2015 Reflective Essay #1 – Perception Checking Perception checking is a way for an individual to check and understand another individual’s ambiguous behavior. Performing a perception check consists of three steps: Describing the behavior, giving two plausible interpretations, and finally, requesting feedback. Perception checks are very beneficial if one wants to avoid making too many assumptions and also to avoid as much conflict as possible. Because of its tendency to avoid conflict, this allows the person who is being addressed to respond in a much more comfortable setting without switching to defensive communication. Overall, perception checks are a great tool to avoid conflicts that might not even be necessary in the first place. My first perception check was performed on my sister Macy, who I chose because lately she has seemed a little sad, and I thought it would be a good chance to figure out why she is acting the way she is. Before I applied the perception check I thought of two plausible reasons why she might be sad. The first reason I thought of, is that work might be a little stressful right now, and the second was that maybe she was having problems with one of her friends. I was incorrect on both of those assumptions, as you will see in the next paragraph.

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
