Traditional isolated nuclear family = ‘normal’ 2. Family is only source of good values- everything comes back to it 3. Private Family- government should not interfere with families 4. Myth of family decline- once stable families are falling apart today C. Historical context 1. Private nuclear family 2. Romantic love- recent dimension, mid-19 th century 3. Breadwinners and homemakers- started mid-19 th century, peaked 1950’s, declining now 4. Equation of love, sex, and marriage D. Why the 1950’s ideal family image evolved 1. Red Scare/McCarthyism-fear of communism 2. Television/Mass Media 3. Women out of labor force after World War II (men return to their jobs)
