Before the french revolution France was ruled by an absolute monarchy. People the believes that the
king was elected by God to rule the people. So killing the king was a pretty big deal.
King Louis 16 th was the king during the time of the revolution, and though it started in 1789, he wasn't
guillotined until 1793. His wife Marie Antoinette was then guillotined. Both were accused of treason
against their countries.

All this happened during the Reign of Terror from 1789-1799 which started after the revolution began,
was when the Girondins, Jacobin's and other Republic minded people held mass executions of counter-
revolutionist.

The people were given a new constitution.
