History 151 Notes – Test 2 Ch. 15 and 16 Muslim Empires Islam : one of the global world religions (true faith) -multi-cultural faith -north Africans were a large part of the population (Judaism, Christianity, Islam) -celebrates Jesus - Allah - god of Abraham and Isaac (is the same god Christians worship) Mohammad (600 AD) -the final revelation of Gods mind -the last word 5 Pillars of Islam (beliefs- common to all Muslims) 1. one God and only one God (Allah and Mohammad- was prophet of Allah) 2. belief in the power of prayer- 5 times a day (can do it no less than 5 times a day) to Mecca (holiest city of Islam) Mullah- does public call for prayer 3. Ramadan - month of spiritual purity -this was the month of fasting -cannot eat anything from sun up to sun down - spiritual purity - punishing the body for spiritual soul 4. Hajj - pilgrimage- every Muslim gets to fly to city of Mecca and worship the KAABA -if you complete the pilgrimage you can have the name HAJJI 5. Alms - giving of Alms (sharing of Allah’s blessing) expected to share what is blessed Christianity and Islam are almost identical but they hate each other. Holy War - the Crusade -declared to protect the faithful -Muslims call it the Jihad -it was to overcome the enemies of God and the prophet -Wahabi The Muslim Empire

-begins with the Turks Arabs - are merchants -live in the holy land 1054- Seljuk Turks - will conquer everything (the holy land) -are Muslim -will not permit Christians to come into the land -were overthrown by Ottoman Turks Ottoman Turks -1280 AD -Constantinople - want to conquer the Byzantine empire which is known as the Constantinople - Sultan (know term) -will be replaced by Beys -feudalism came to Europe with an Islamic name Beys -were mini kings -turkish equivalent of Medieval Lord Janissary - were created by Sultans -loyalty does not lie with local landlord Fire Arms - turks were the first people to explore gunpowder - Ottoman Turks finally captured Constantinople in 1453 - From this the Byzantine empire will die - Ottomans will overthrow Persia - They will move on and conquer Baghdad - Under the Turks was Selim I Selim I -in control of Jerusalem -they control all of Islamic cities -Selim adopts title Caliph (is the successor of Mohammad himself) -he became the spiritual leader of the entire world Vlad Tepes or known as Vlad Dracul- he who impails -is a blood thirsty individual -he impails

-he was very cruel and very hard to deal with -died violently 1529- Turks will make it to Vienna -Suleyman the Magnificent (Turks will make it to Vienna because of him) -Asians will create an army that will push the Turks away -1529-seige of Vienna fails -1683- 2 nd siege of Vienna -Turks defeat Vienna (monumental victory)
