Waters Elizabeth Waters Mrs. Nesrsta English 11 10 May 2016 Realism Research Paper Change, in several situations, has a negative connotation. People are not willing to experience change, and the good, and the bad that come with it. Change is a way that history is either created or destroyed. Because of change in people’s hearts, racial discrimination was put to rest, and people were now judged by their hearts instead of their skin. A change that helped shape America was Realism, a time in history where literature showed or described people and things the way they truly were. The literary movement of realism was inspired by the historical events surrounding the Civil War and brought characterization to American readers as a new form of fiction. The literary period before Realism was Romanticism, which took place from 1798 to 1870. Literature written within the Romanticism era was fantasy, never quite full of facts. There was so much exaggeration in the writing that it was seen as only something people dreamed about. Within this time period, major historical events happen in America, such as electing the second president John Adams as well as granting African American men the right to vote (Taylor). Some well known authors are Mark Twain and Stephen Crane These men wrote stories that had some aspects of Romanticism but the majority of their stories were focused on realism.
