The objective in thisexperiment is to separate the three constituents and determine the percentages of each componentfound in the mixture. This is done in order to prove that the composition as stated on the label ofPanacetin is accurate. Another objective is to identify whether the unknown component inPanacetin included phenacetin or acetanilide based on its melting point range.2) According to the label on Panacetin, the mixture should contain 10% sucrose, 40% aspirin,and 50% of the unknown component. The ranges that were determined close enough to the labelto confirm its contents were 8-12% sucrose, 35-45% aspirin, and 45-55% unknown. Using thetotal amount of each component recovered to find the percent compositions, the experimentalvalues found for each of the separate components were 20.7% sucrose, 34.8% aspirin, and 44.4%unknown. While the percentages for both aspirin and the unknown are fairly close to thepercentages in the reasonable range, the percent composition for sucrose is about 8% off fromthe amount that it should be. This discrepancy can most likely be attributed to human error sincetwo of the components are extremely close to the correct range; the starting sample of Panacetin
