What are ethics?

Expectations set by society, not all the same

The standard for us is found in the gospel
o
Sociology statement of ethics: common set of values and has primary goal as the welfare
and protection of the group of people/individuals
Privacy: what is not public, kept to yourself
o
Not the same for everyone – huge spectrum of what people consider to be private
o
Depends on the person
o
When you give out personal information, who “owns” that information? The person you
gave it out to
o
Everything is tracked!
Anonymous v. confidential
o
You need to tell the respondents which it is
o
Anonymous = just info, no name attached
o
Confidential = take the name but won’t release it, you know who the respondent is but
you make an agreement with them to keep it confidential
o
If you tell a respondent it is anonymous, you cannot have any way to identify them or it
