Robbery – the act of taking the property of another without their consent.
Vehicle Hijacking – the act of stealing another’s vehicle with the victim present and
using violent methods
Modus operandi – the method used to commit a crime
Perpetrator – The person/s that are committing the crime
Victim – The person that is affected by the crime committed

Introduction
Vehicle hijacking is a prevalent problem all over the globe, but especially in South
Africa. Vehicle hijacking is the robbery of vehicles, with the victims present, they are
often threatened with the use of a firearm or maybe kidnapped. This form of crime is
still being studied and there is still much to be discovered on the subject. In this
essay we will discuss the possible motives and causes of vehicle hijacking, as well
as why it is such a concern in South Africa. The modus operandi of the preparators
will also be discussed.
Motives and causes of vehicle hijacking
Vehicle hijacking is a multifaceted offence and it is hard to define concrete reasons
as to why someone would commit this crime. One of the prominent reasons is that
this is a crime of opportunity.[ CITATION Bru03 \l 7177 ] Offenders will scope out
potential victims and target the most vulnerable ones. People who are alone, in unlit
areas or seem inexperienced in driving are the most vulnerable to these attacks.
