After the passing of the 13th Amendment, African Americans still faced oppression in the South. Slave owners and slave states refused to recognize African Americans as free or equal. As a result, actions were taken to govern the activities of African Americans and limit their freedoms.Many farmers used sharecropping to keep African Americans in debt and working. Education was still separate and racism was very high in the south. Many African Americans migrated to the North.
