Michael Klatsky Essay # 1 September 19 th 2007 Dr. N. Hazelton English 101 A photograph that appears to be just the cereal aisle in your local supermarket is the artists’ method of opening our eyes to a multitude of problems. Photographing only the unhealthy and sugary cereals concentrates our attention toward the numerous health issues plaguing our society. Marketers, in their own right have to innovate and create convincing ad campaigns that portray anything as good. Entrusting the most important meal of the day to anyone is a huge responsibility; however, the heavy marketing of cheap and unhealthy cereal as the right way to start the day is just blatant corporate irresponsibility. An increasing number of foods are being labeled as unhealthy. Armed with this new information and acting in the name of health; many places have banned unhealthy foods. In a crusade of whopping proportions, New York City has banned trans-fats. Habits, both good and bad, largely trace their establishment to our childhood years. Instead of banning

Many other countries sell sugary cereal as well, though they stock and price sugary cereal at levels similar to healthier varieties, from what I have observed living in Israel and visiting many parts of the Europe for several years. A health conscious person in America is lacking the offer of a healthy alternative to many foods. Offering healthy alternatives to many of our societies unhealthy staple foods at levels people can find and afford is an enormous challenge facing our society.
