Thompson Jocelyn Thompson HSEM 100 Dr. Primiano 13 December 2007 Another Country Another Country  rest solely as a reflection of homosexuality rather it relies on  multiple concerns such as culture, government, more specifically communism, as well  as, war-time. The tone of  Another Country  is set before the play even begins, by that of  one, Cyril Connolly, from  Enemies of Promise , Connolly delved into the complexities of being an adolescent during war-time.  Connolly’s quote about  Another Country  proves factual to the drama’s central concerns,  many of which do not focus on homosexuality. As briefly stated before,  Another Country  suggests the issues of culture, government, and that of a war-time society. Mitchell expresses  Another Country’s  central concerns through its main  characters, Judd and Bennett. As most storylines with two main characters often do,  Word count: 164/1,004 1 “The experiences undergone by boys at the great public schools, their glories and disappointments, are so intense as to dominate their lives and to arrest their development. From these it results that the greater part of the ruling class remains adolescent, school-minded, self-conscious, cowardly, sentimental and in the last analysis homosexual.” (3)

Thompson Judd and Bennett play off each other, acting as one while opposites of each other. Judd  and Bennett are the binary couple of  Another Country.   While Bennett is more forceful  and active in how he wishes to rebel Judd is more rational in his planning. This is shown  when Judd exclaims, “I want to be dull! Can’t you understand? Revolution is made by  dull people doing dull things with tremendous thoroughness and discipline!” (55).  Bennett on the other hand is impulsive. He wants to trust his intuitions and act upon
