Lauren Gray Film Review Essay 9 April 2008 Power, Deceit, and Preaching Marjoe is a film about a preacher, Marjoe, who at age three, could recite scripture and preach all from memory. When he became four years old, he became America’s youngest ordained minister and travelled the United States holding revivals and even performing weddings. Though it seems like a great and easy childhood, for Marjoe it was not for several different reasons and growing up as a preacher was not everything he wanted it to be. When he was little, his mom would hold him under water and try to suffocate him until he did memorize his sermons. He also had to study for hours and he felt like he didn’t really have a real childhood because he never got to go out and play. After he grew up and was preaching for a while, he began healing and really pushing money at revivals. From this point on, and even when he was younger, it was all about the money. From age four to fourteen, Marjoe estimated he made about three million dollars, none of which he ever saw. He supported his parents and he never got any
