Covalent Bonding in H 2 ( g ) H    + H H : H Covalent Bonding  involves sharing of electrons between two or more  nuclei.  Lewis Structure of H 2 ( g ). Also represented as  H–H. The line represents a pair of shared electrons,  or a  bonding electron pair .

Covalent Bonding  can lead to a stable octet of electrons for each  atom involved. Cl    +    Cl                   Cl  Cl Sharing one pair of electrons results in a single bond. + Sharing two pairs of electrons results in a  double bond. = + Sharing three pairs of electrons results in a  triple bond. nonbonding electron pairs (lone pairs) bonding electron pair Bond Order 1 2 3

Covalent bond formation in H 2 . When a covalent bond is  formed between atoms, energy  is released. The bound form of  the atoms is more stable than  the unbound form.  The same amount of energy  needs to be absorbed in order  to break the bond between the  bound atoms. The energy needed to break up  one mole of each bond is  referred to as the   bond  energy,  BE . It is measured in  kJ per mole of each bond.
