2 WWI Soldier After the end of World War I, Germany defiantly violated the Treaty of Versailles, and were sinking US ships. There were two sides to World War II, the Axis, which consisted of Germany, Italy, and Japan, and the Allies who were made up of France, Britain, Russia and The United States. There were two major campaigns during World War II, the North African and the Italian. Germany initiated WWII; Japan provoked the United States, and millions of people died. Even though the United States did not want to enter World War II, it had no choice because of the bombing of Pearl Harbor and the contributions of the Great Depression. The Campaigns in Northern Africa had three phases: the Western Desert campaign, Operation Torch, and the Tunisia campaign. The objective of the North African campaign was to regain control of the Suez Canal and to clear out the Germans and the Vichy French. The Western Desert campaign took place in Egypt and Libya. Operation Torch, fought in Algiers and Morocco, was led by the Americans and was the first amphibious attack of World War II by landing in the three strategic areas of Casablanca, led by Patton, and of Oran and Algiers, led by the British. The Tunisia campaign took place in Tunisia, and the Germans ended up retreating to Northern Tunisia in the port cities of Tunis and Bizerte. Major battles in Northern Africa occurred in Casablanca, Morocco, and the defeat of Rommel in Tunisia, and El Alamein in Egypt. A victory by the Allies opened up attacks on France and Italy and regained crucial oil supply lines. German and Italian casualties totaled 620,000; the British lost 220,000 men, and the
