Poli 202 Chapter 1 notes 10/1/2006 Political Science revolves around concepts such as government, power, conflict, state- society relations, and public policy. The tradition of Politics is based in Western Civilizations The forefathers of democracy are Plato, Aristotle. Since the end of the cold war democracy has become the most accepted form of government. Feminist-Scholars have questioned political science claiming it has ignored the question of gender. The first north American political science program as in Chicago in 1880. Politics is the process of making binding decisions to allocate scarce resources within society. Power can be defined as the ability of a person to make others do something that he may not otherwise do. o Coersion – using force o Traditional authority – doing it out of tradition and respect o Charismatic authority – extraordinary qualities of the charismatic leader o Legal authority – based upon legal principles, laws that legitimizes the authority.
