Poli 202 Chapter 3 Notes 10/1/2006 Methodology It is a central component to studying politics. Dependant variable – the political phenomenon we are trying to explain Independent variable – the explanation of the dependant variable is based upon the outcomes of these. AKA explanatory variables. Correlation – is a relationship in two or more variables. Change happens together. Laws – in science, a law is a regularly occurring correlation between two or more variables. Taxonomy – a subject divided into classes distinct from one another. Typology - The kind of taxonomy in which classificatory distinctions are graded and ordered. Paradigms – it is a prime example of a particular phenomenon o Or it can be a particular way of looking at phenomena, formulating questions and generalizations during research. Model – a theoretical and simplified representation of the real world, helping us understand otherwise complex processes. o
