CMN 456 Professor Farrell Essay 1 February 25, 2008 “Deliberative Rhetoric and Prospective Students” Deliberative rhetoric is apparent both directly and indirectly throughout the University of New Hampshire’s Virtual Tour, a guide aimed at prospective students. Although deliberative enthymemes are consistently apparent in the tour, each individual topic appeals to a unique set of what Aristotle deemed “topics of the good.” For instance, in the “Residential Life: Sustainability” portion of the tour, UNH boasts that their resident halls are the recipient of “the First Environmental Protection Agency Energy Star rating.” This award is an example of the University’s “commitment to sustainability in every area of campus life.” This appeals to potential students because the rating was given to UNH first , an achievement that can never be had again. Any achievement is a topic of the good because it is an action that is “praised” (Bk1: 1363: 10). More so, earning the rating is a title “possessed by no one else, exceptional; for this
