Toward a Theory of Diversity of Human Fieid Pattern iMarie iHastings-Toisma, PhD, CNiM Associate Professor, Nurse iMidwifery University of Coiorado at Denver & iHeaith Sciences Center "Pattern born amid formiessness... that is [life 'sj basic beauty and its basic mystery."(Gleick, 1987). Abstract A theory of diversity of human field pattern, derived from Rogers' Science of Unitary Human Beings conceptual nursing model, was proposed and tested. The purpose was (a) to determine the validity of Rogers' proposition that individuals have the capacity to participate in the process of change, and (b) to validate the construct of diversity of human field pattern. A descriptive correlation design tested three hypotheses in a convenience sample of 173 men and women. Hypotheses predicted that diversity of human field pattern would be positively related to both risk-taking and time experience, and that risk-taking would be positively related to time experience. All three hypotheses were fully or partially supported. Findings provide support for the theory and for the construct of diversity of human field pattern. Introduction Pattern has been described as aprocessofchangewhichisincreasingly innovative and varied(Rogers, 1990). It is an expression ofincreased sensitivity to the rhythmand creative drives of the human field(Ferguson,1980) and represents theconstantmotion and creation ofvibrating loops or strings of energywhich, when excited, promote field diversity (Witten, 2003). The dynamic 34 creation of new and more diverse pattern is indicative of the flow of field energy-theintegrality.Pattern represents connections of human- environmentalqualities(Bateson, 1979). It is the creation of more diverse pattern, which simultaneously serves to both distinguish and unify fields and is an unpredictable process furtheringgrowthandevolution (Claes,1971;Rogers, 1990). In Rogers' (1990)Science of Unitary Humans, the human field is Visions
describedaspatternedenergy identifiablethroughitsfield manifestations.Theconceptof pattern, however, has not been well definedwithinthemodel. The purpose of this investigation was to validate the construct of diversity of human field pattern and to examine Rogers' proposition that individuals have the capacity to participate in the process of change. Theoretical Rationale A theory of diversity of human field pattern derived from Rogers' conceptual model was developed to further understanding of how humans experiencechangeandmobilize potentialsintheprocessof diversification. The flow of energy to createamorediversepattern characterizes unitary human change throughout thelifeprocess. The manner in which patterning proceeds -themannerinwhichlife experiences unfold -- is influenced by humansinprocesswith environmental fields. Individuals have the capacity to participate in the change process (Rogers, 1986).
