Davis Berryhill NSC 170C Carbohydrates 1. Lactose Intolerance is the inability to process lactose. Lactose is a form of sugar that can be found in many dairy products including milk, cheese, etc. Being lactose intolerant is not curable although throughout the years scientists have discovered ways to lighten the symptoms. Those who are lactose intolerant will experience either, bloating, cramps, diarrhea, painful gas, nausea from between 30 minutes to 2 hours of eating dairy products. Someone who is lactose intolerant has a small intestine that cannot produce enough of the enzyme lactase, which breaks down lactose. The undigested lactose then moves to the large intestine and reacts to the normal bacteria that are in the large intestine that creates the symptoms that I stated before. Someone who has sever lactose intolerance would be better of if they completely stayed away from dairy products. Even a small amount could trigger their symptoms and could be very irritable. Someone will less severe lactose issues could eat very small portions of dairy to still enjoy their foods they love. Having this
