Davis Berryhill NSC 170C Supplements Article 1. Should You Still Take That Multi? This article included a lot of examples of experiments done by a various amount of schools. It seems as if its main message is that multis are not exactly beneficial nor dangerous. A study from Harvard examined about 6000 men to test daily intake of these vitamins and the results were not dramatic, “ Previous trials, not as big or long as this one, have produced inconsistent results about the potential benefits of multis on cognitive health. It’s possible that if supplementation had begun at earlier ages and if the subjects had been less well-nourished and less well-educated, the results might have been different, the researchers speculated.” As you can see there were no major results in this trial, making scientists believe that there is no purpose for these supplements at all. One trial made by the National Institutes of Health was done similar with the Harvard one which included a lot of subjects, although this experiment became faulty because lack of participation by the ones being examined. This article states, “Over an average of five years, those taking the multi did not have a reduced risk of a second heart attack or other cardiovascular events. However, many subjects withdrew or did not stick with the regimen, in part because it involved six large caplets a day, so the validity of the findings are limited.” As you can see there is still not any changes being made from the intake of these multivitamins. Although is seems that many of these trials were unsuccessful in finding anything, there was one discovery by the Physicians’ Health Study II. They examined 14,600 men over the age of 50 and found some results within the trial. It states, “It found that those taking a multi (Centrum Silver again) for 11 years had a small reduction in cancer risk; there was no effect on the risk of cardiovascular disease.” Although there was a discovery within this trial, it only examined those of men. A similar French study found that there was no reductions of

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
