Curriculum for Agricultural Science Education © 2020ASA – Activity 5.2.4 Is Natural Best? – Page 1Name_____________________________________________________Activity 5.2.4 Is Natural Best?PurposeIn addition to managing breeding animals, livestock producers must set goals for mating and breeding. Isthe goal purebred or crossbred offspring? Which specific sires, or males, and dams, or females, will aproducer use? Does the producer own the breeding animals necessary to meet those goals? Then the producer must decide which breeding method to use to produce offspring. A producer considers avariety of factors including profitability, animal safety, and human safety when deciding which breedingmethod to use. Four common breeding systems are natural, artificial insemination, embryo transfer, andcloning. Due to cost and labor requirements, a producer most often chooses natural breeding or artificialinsemination. When producers choose natural breeding, male and female animals mate as they would in nature. Artificialinsemination occurs when a producer collects the semen from the male and inserts it into the female. Theanimals may or may not be on the same farm or even the same state.
