Psychological Disorders and Therapies To study the abnormal is the best way of understanding the normal. – William Jones What is a psychological disorder: -Statistical Infrequency -Deviates from the Norm -Maladaptive- disrupting job or family. -Causes personal distress or pain -450 million people worldwide have mental disorders Historical Theories: -Supernatural: evil spirits, celestial events, godlike powers -Biological: neurobiology, genetics, brain damage. -Psychological: role of environment DSM-IV: diagnostic and statistical manual of mental disorders, 4 th edition (TR) Uses multi axial classification, five dimensions (axes) :I-V Axis I: Clinical Syndromes e.g., anxiety disorders, depression, ADHS, eating disorders. Axis II: personality disorders - not a description of personality traits e.g., antisocial personality disorder Axis III: General Medical Condition e.g., heart problems, diabetes Axis IV: psychosocial/ environmental - employment/ educational problems Axis V: Global Assessment of functioning
