Topics Include: - Group behavior - Conformity and obedience - Attitudes and attitude change - Person perception (e.g. first impressions) - Attraction - Aggression - Prejudice Group Behavior: - People often behave differently in a group - E.G. riots, looting… - De-individuation o Being in a group makes individuals less accountable for his/her actions. Case of Kitty Genovese: - Murdered in NYC, 1964 - Attacked by man with a knife - 38 people witnessed attack - Attack lasted 30 minutes - Only one called the police. Bystander Effect: - Darley & Latane’: people didn’t help because of “diffusion of responsibility” - o Student alone: 70% went to help o With one person who didn’t help: 7%n helped - o Subjects talked via intercom o Three conditions 2 in a group (subject and collaborator): respond 80% of time 3 in a group: respond 60% of time
