Biology Lab Makeup Jordan Stanton The solar system has fascinated scientists for thousands of years. Its mystery and importance to science as a whole is unparalleled. The solar system is made up of 9 unique planets that all possess different qualities. The planets in the solar system are Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune and Pluto. The first planet in the solar system ring is Mercury. This planet is very difficult to study from Earth because it is so close to the sun. Mercury is the second smallest planet behind Pluto, but its orbit is the fastest out of all the planets. The name Mercury is created from its orbital speed. The next planet in the solar system is Venus, the jewel of the sky. Scientists refer to Venus as the Earth’s sister planet because it is so similar in size, mass, density and volume. Even though these planets are similar in size and structure they are very different; Venus has no oceans and is surrounded by a heavy atmosphere composed mainly of carbon dioxide with virtually no water vapor.
