Inexpensive yet Pricey Sumel Ahmed February 9, 2006 Author’s Theme: The theme of the play is to show simple things cause pain and grief. Victor and Walter simply meet so they can sell their parent’s furniture, yet they discover so much about their true relationship. Arthur Miller’s Definition of Price: The price is the negative aftermath effects that have resurfaced during this family’s reunion. Long lost contact has made these two brothers bitter against one another and a reunion has made it worse for them. Thesis Statement: Arthur Miller is defining the price as the problems that one family must account for during their reunion. Victor and Walter are paying the price by simply meeting with each other, and this can be shown through their actions towards each other.

In Arthur Miller’s The Price, we can understand how families hate each other. Family is supposed to be the best things in our lives, yet the protagonist and the antagonist in the play can differ. Instead of brotherly love, there is only bitter anger that they have hidden over the past years. However, when old furniture reunites this family many things go wrong. Arthur Miller is defining the price as the problems that one family must account for during their reunion. The setting is in New York City after the Great Depression, in an old apartment full of antique furniture. The current owners are two long lost brothers, who are selling their late parents possession because they have no need for the furniture, yet they have need for the money.
