Community Mental Health
Introduction
The group that I will research regarding mental health needs are the homeless. I am
researching the homeless because over one part of the three equal parts of the United States are
homeless people with mental health issues.
Narrative/data
There are approximately over 581,000 homeless people in the United States. A lot of
these people are considered not having the appropriate amount of shelter and are affected and
sleeping outside in very large cities and the suburbs. Even though a lot of these people are
considered homeless, they are not homeless all alone. Some of these homeless people have
young or smaller children, so everyone in the family is being affected. African American Men are
at the top of the list with being homeless which data shows over 61 percent, the women right
after. Many of these homeless people have very high rates of having mental health illnesses as
well. Some of the factors are traumatic events in their past such as molestation or abuse.
