Ariel Parker Geography Research Paper Outline March 30, 2008 Ethiopia Part 1: Physical Geography 435,071 square miles and the world’s 27 th largest country Comparable in size to Bolivia, and is about two-thirds as large as Alaska Major portion of Ethiopia lies on the Horn of Africa, which is the eastern-most part of the African Landmass Bordered by Sudan to the west, Djibouti and Eritra to the north, Somalia to the East, and Kenya to the south. Within Ethiopia is a massive highland complex of mountains and dissected plateaus divided by the Great Rift Valley. Surrounded by lowlands and steppes 3 climatic zones: the cool zone above 2,400 meters (temps ranging from 32-61 degrees F), the temperate zone at elevations of 1,500 to 2, 400 meters (temps from 61-86 degrees F), and the hot zone, which is 1,500 meters and below, with both tropical and arid conditions and daytime temps ranging from 81-122 degrees F. High mountain ranges: The Semien Mountains and the Bale Mountains One of the lowest areas of land in Africa, the Danakil Depresssion Normal rainy season is from mid-June to mid-September
