27/02/2007 22:50:00 What’s the difference between communication and communicationS, and why has  Professor Kuhn been so insistent on never using the latter term? Difference between communication and Communication S Linear model: Act  of transferring things; dynamic proves model: processes  of  coordinating and controlling activity and knowledge Those who use the term  communicationS   are not concerned with how  meanings are constructed or how meanings shape action But the DPM argues that all aspects of social life function on the meanings we  construct with others From this perspective, one can communicate  WITH  another, but not  TO  another Why does the dynamic process model of communication focus on the construction of  intersubjective meanings rather than fully shared meanings? Why is it that one can communicate  with but not to another? What’s the defining characteristic of the participants in communication? Communication is not about creating INTERSUBJECTIVE MEANINGS that allow  us to coordinate and control activity, NOT about sharing precisely the same meanings You and I will never share precisely the same meanings Meanings may coincide, be synchronized, or correspond but not be identical The “realities” we create are shaped by the context, which is itself socially  constructed It is constructed by these types of interactions over a  long  period of time Important Points:     The context provides rules  and resources  for interaction We do not always have clear intentions when we send messages (Ellen) o Intent      is often worked out in the process of communicating  Symbols are often fundamentally ambiguous We construct meanings  through  symbols- but s ymbols  do not contain  meanings

The statement “ONE CANNOT NOT  COMMUNICATE” o is misleading. Rather… “ONE  CANNOT COMMUNICATE” Communications is not sending messages alone You don’t “communicate” meaning to me.  You convey  info: I interpret  info  and meaning emerges from that.  There is no communication  without both  components Difference between communication and Communication S Linear model: Act  of transferring things; dynamic process model: processes  of  coordinating and controlling activity and knowledge Those who use the term  communicationS   are not concerned with how  meanings are constructed or how meanings shape action But the DPM argues that all aspects of social life function on the meanings we  construct with others From this perspective, one can communicate  WITH  another, but not  TO  another

As a current student on this bumpy collegiate pathway, I stumbled upon Course Hero, where I can find study resources for nearly all my courses, get online help from tutors 24/7, and even share my old projects, papers, and lecture notes with other students.

I cannot even describe how much Course Hero helped me this summer. It’s truly become something I can always rely on and help me. In the end, I was not only able to survive summer classes, but I was able to thrive thanks to Course Hero.

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
