Lizzie Murdter Rumsfeld conjures the illusion of rising water, steadily rising above our faces until it is too late to do anything. As Americans we could be ignoring a very real and “relentless” threat to our nation and “other free people.” This terrorist is never clearly defined in Rumsfeld’s Address at the 88 th Annual American Legion National Convention. Well, we do know they’re somewhere in Iraq right? Rumsfeld strengthens his attack strategy when he alludes to a war which united our nation against evil. He wants to make it clear perhaps even “crystal clear” (could he have spared us the stale metaphor?) that this is one more time we’re going to need a sacrifice and a large one. Americans believe that they are sending their children off to die for a just cause. What exactly is this cause and who are the people we are fighting? Can every solider give you a descriptive account of the reasons and motivations that they are fighting for without citing George W. Bush or terrorism as a reference?
