Laura Houd Mack Eason Justice Assignment Topic #1: The Natural Lottery 1a: Rawls claims that the natural lottery is an unfair gift given to many individuals who do not deserve it. It is unfair that some people are born into a wealthy family and still obtain beauty, talent, and intelligence, while many others are born into poor lifestyles, are abused by their parents and have poor education. Fairness is the ultimate key to a content and orderly society. In order to achieve this society of equality and fairness, the more fortunate class must contribute as much as possible to help the less fortunate class. We must do our best to overcome this natural lottery and give everyone in society the same chance to live a happy, successful life. 1b: Nozick disagrees with Rawls because he claims that it is not unjust to accept and cherish the life you were born into. There is no reason for you to feel guilty for winning the natural lottery and you are entitled to self-ownership. The natural privileges you receive when you are born belong to you and you are entitled to take advantage of them in any way you please. He says that in order to create the best functioning society,
