Jackson Farley 3/12/08 Kelly Herold CMST 191 Preventing Shootings on Campus AG – On Thursday, February 14, 2008, there was a shooting on a college campus in Illinois. This has been a tragedy for all Americans, especially for the people involved in the shooting. There are many questions that come up after one of these events happens, but a main question is how to prevent these things from happening. MT – Preventing shootings on campus. SP – How can we stop this from happening everywhere on campuses? There are many solutions that people are coming up with but one is coming up the most. PP – 1. Solution – Let students carry concealed guns on campus. 2. Problem – If we allowed guns on campus it could create a more dangerous environment for students. 3. Problem – Cops couldn’t identify the real shooter. Forecast Sentence – How can we eliminate a shooting from happening again?

1. Solution – Let students carry concealed guns on campus. In the past year, there have been two shootings at college campuses. One of them was at Virginia Tech, and one was at Northern Illinois University. Ever since then, people have been trying to come up with solutions to try and prevent a shooting from happening again. One solution keeps coming up and that is the one for letting students carry concealed weapons on campus. A group of college students called Students for Concealed Carry on Campus has over 12,000 members nationwide and are trying to help the cause of preventing shootings on campuses. Michael Guzeman, the leader of the Texas chapter of Students for Concealed Carry on Campus, joined "Good Morning America Weekend" Saturday to make the case for his organization. Guzeman said in his interview, mostly on gun laws and how criminals don’t think about the laws and don’t care for them and here is a quote from that interview, "Tougher gun laws don't deter criminals. If criminals cared what the law says, they wouldn't be called a criminal in the first place, they would be law-abiding citizens” ( , 2008 p. 1). He also goes onto say that in reality that only the people who already have concealed gun permits and are over 21 will be the only ones carry the weapons which boils down to about 1 person out of 100.
