This newsletterwill help families better understand assessment and howassessment data is used.Assessment TypesThree different types of assessment: Diagnostic, formative andsummativeThe Arizona English Language Learner Assessment is developed tomeet both a state and federal requirement that measures languageproficiency (Az Department of Education). Standards are put intoplace to decide both reassessment and placements for ELLstudents.Diagnostic Assessment is an assessment given at the beginning ofthe school year to help the teachers and students. “Diagnostic testis important because they can help us assess the English language”(Crocker, M). “This is the first step to see where a student fits and to
make sure that the student is in the right course.Formative assessment is more flexible and focuses on giving thestudent and teacher feedback” (Author, 2016). Collaboration isimportant when working with formative assessment. Several waysto use this assessment is portfolios to show how far a student hascome, or exit tickets, fill in the blanks, drawing, role playing andmuch more. Formative assessments can be use throughout theschool year.Summative Assessment “is used to determine how well the studentslearned the material throughout the class” (Smith, 2022). Teachersuse this at the end of the year in form of a test to see how wellstudents have done.
