In the novel the people who are denied their love and passion experience major changes in their personalities and their lives. Love and passion have the power to undermine a person and cause significant changes to their lives. Love can be seen as a strong feeling where a person’s entire being wants something, and life without that something would ruin them because it has significantly become a part of them. Love portrays the passion that a person has for something, it portrays the one happiness that can be brought to a person. Esquirel depicts love and passion in a fictional way with a realistic concept that many people could relate to. Esquivel develops the theme of love and passion in Like Water for Chocolate through the love lives of the characters and how they are affected by it.
