Christa Cass T-190 1/23/08 Good versus Evil Shines through Transcendentalism “Transcendentalism is known as a literary and philosophical movement asserting the existence of an ideal spiritual reality that transcends the empirical and scientific and is knowable through intuition.” (American Heritage Dictionary) I studied these values extensively throughout high school and it is easily recognizable in Goethe’s Faust . Transcendentalism is all about the truth existing within the soul and self examination. We identify ourselves, subconsciously through our inner thoughts. Ralph Waldo Emerson, the most famous of all transcendentalists said, “Every natural fact is a symbol of some spiritual fact. Every appearance in nature corresponds to some state of the mind, and that state of the mind can only be described by presenting that natural appearance as its picture.” When Faust says “Two souls, alas, are dwelling in my breast” (1112), he is revealed the struggle that he is experiencing. I believe this struggle to be two fold. Faust is
