NAME ________________________________ Bio 311C F08 Discussion Worksheet #15 Cell Cycle Worksheet 1. The cell cycle consists of interphase and the M-phase. Interphase is further divided into three parts and the M-phase is divided into two parts. Next to each cell cycle phase or subphase, give a brief description of its function. G 1 : S: G 2 : Mitosis: division of nucleus Cytokinesis: division of cytoplasm/cell 2. What is a sister chromatid? A centromere? Sister chromatids are the identical copies of the original DNA double helix that result from DNA replication. They are held together at the centromere Centromeres are the specialized regions of the duplicated chromosome where the sister chromatids are held together. The kinetochore will associate with the centromere region. 3. What is the goal of mitosis? To generate 2 genetically identical cells (each with an exact copy of all chromosomes). 4. List the 5 phases of mitosis (as discussed in class). For each, give a brief description of the location & structure of the chromosomes, the location of centrosomes (MTOCs), and the structure of the spindle. Prophase: chromosomes consist of 2 sister chromatids, starting to condense, found in nucleus Duplicated centrosomes starting to move apart from one another as spindle begins to form between Prometaphase: replicated chromosomes fully condensed with kinetochores at centrosomes. Nuclear envelope fragmented, so
