American Government Chapter 5 & 6 Notes Chapter 5: The Political System 1. What is a political party? 1. Shared beliefs: the members should believe in the same philosophy and be willing to work for the same goals. 2. Program: agree on a program for turning their beliefs into law after their candidates have been elected. 3. Chance of Success: have a realistic chance of winning an election or gaining support for their programs, either now or in the future. Pressure groups: minor parties that barely satisfy the political party requirements. Parties didn’t exist before 1776 in a way that we would recognize today. George Washington warned against forming of political parties in his Farewell Address. 2. What do political parties try to accomplish? 3. Why does the United States keep the two-party systems?
