POLI 202 9/18/2006 Chapter 2-3 Class notes Politics is the study of power, conflict, and resources o Power allows you to inflict your will upon others. Political Scientists search for Who has the power? And Who doesn’t? o Conflicts are the struggle for the power. Elections, Protests, Fighting. o Resources can be anything people want – financial, organizational, power access and distribution of resources. What is Science? o Observation o Data Collection o Analysis (patterns) o Hypothesis Independent variable (cause) Dependant variable (effect) o Experiment o Theory Dependant Variable is what your interested in explaining. Why, Where does it exist and how? Independent Variable is the thing that acts on your dependant variable. You need it for the cause and effect to occur. If a theory is proven many times by 3 rd party scientists then it becomes a law. Charles Darwin, the father of evolution, when he first set out on his experiments it was not to prove evolution, he was going around nature to catalogue all of God’s wonderful creations. o
