1. How do nature and nurture together shape development? - All of our characteristics created through the joint workings of nature and nurture - Example: Schizophrenia - Genetic component - Environmental component (home) - Only children with __both____ are likely to develop it Example: Werner’s study (Hawaiian Longitudinal Study) Followed development of __700___ Hawaiian children Study lasted ___30+_____ years Many measures on each child Examined__doctors records for birth complications____ Social workers observed family interactions and interviewed moms when children were 1 and 10 Interviewed teachers about _academic performance__ Examined police, family court, and social service records Standardized _intelligence and personality_ tests (at age 10, 18, and 30) Results: Children who experienced complications in prenatal period or at birth more likely to develop problems Of these children, those who encountered good rearing conditions often "caught up" Only children who also experienced poor rearing conditions consistently had bad outcomes Some resilient children overcame having “two strikes against them” (more later) Insight from nature-nurture research: timing of experiences matters - Example: Romanian orphans (pg. 6) (review for test)
