Stoicism: all of life becomes celebratory occasions, we should sing hymns and praise the deities every day Symposium: central institution of aristocratic household symposion: posion is Greek word for drinking, prefix means together/with time for people to drink together, drinking party for aristocrats in the evening to entertain themselves, given for a variety of reasons: celebrate wedding, birthday, arrival of important person, departure, in the context of religious festival, will come in early evening and enter into the host’s mansion and specifically into a room in the house called the andron: andron means men, the men’s room, unlike the one in Lucian, symposium is event for aristocratic men, not women, the room has easy access to the street, would be provided abundance of food, there could be music, dancing, skit at some point, speeches, one of the few occasions where people would meet, example: Menander, sacrifice of lamb leisurely life of aristocrats (significance) Function of symposium: entertainment of aristocratic men, for the host to show off his wealth and impress upon the others the amount and quality of the food and wine being serves, quality of guests indicates status, social packing order of aristocrats: according to where they were seated respectively, access to the street people who weren’t invited: highlight
