Page 3 Questions 1. What factors stimulated interest in the human body? a. People wanted to know what cased death and disease. They started questioning body function and how certain herbs and potions affected it. 2. How did human health change as lifestyle changed? a. People became less resistant to some diseases because the wild plants they ate before had enzymes and chemicals that protected them. Also, people became sedentary and altered their diets. Living in closer proximity also enabled disease to spread more quickly. The change in diet also caused an increase in tooth decay. 3. What kinds of activities helped promote the development of modern medical science? a. People asked more questions and sought answers. This lead to modern medical science. Techniques evolved and knowledge of the body evolved. New medical language was created as well as dissection of the human body. Page 4 Questions 1. What are the differences between anatomy and physiology? a. Anatomy – Examines structures, or morphology, of body parts, their forms and organization. b. Physiology – considers the functions of body parts – what they do and how they do it. 2. Why is it difficult to separate the topics of anatomy and physiology? a. Because anatomical structures make possible their functions. 3. List several examples that illustrate how the structure of a body part makes possible its function. a. Bones in the hand- long jointed fingers make grasping possible. b. Walls of the heart contract and propel blood out of chambers into the blood vessels. c. Shape of the mouth enables reception of food d. Tooth shape enables the breaking down of food. 4. How are anatomy and physiology both old and new fields? a.
