Anil Kanungo (ASK 358) Partners: Rohan Paranjpe, Jongyoon Lim PHY 115L – 60675 October 3, 2008 EXPERIMENT 4 – Refraction of Light Observation 1: 1) When the ray enters the plastic block and then exits, it exits at the same angle only translated over. The ray actually changes angle once it passes through the barrier of the block which causes it to change angle and thus translate upon exiting the block 2) The rays that leave the plastic block they are translated over by successive, uniform intervals. They intensity of the light becomes weaker and weaker along these intervals as well. This is due to the multiple reflections occurring within the slab of plastic. As the light “bounces” back and forth between the barriers of the slab, it exits at these reflection points (within the slab) as well. If light exits at these points, then there is less light available for the next reflection. Thus, as the light successfully reflects along the inside of the slab, it becomes weaker and weaker. 3) Block thickness related to n : 4) If the laser did not have an initial reflection on a slab of glass, it would be at it’s critical angle and also be normally incident.
