The factor cos({2 π / λ }r- ω t) denotes what position along the wave that is being observed. It is multiplied by A to obtain the vertical displacement, y. A remains constant in the equation while y varies as cos({2 π / λ }r- ω t) varies. Therefore, yes, A may be independent of r but vertical displacement, y, may not. 3) Yes, the cork will not bob up and down at points where the maxima from one wave meet the minima from another. 4) 5) See Above 6) See Above 7) This heat energy is generated by friction from the rubbing of the two sandpapers which is caused by the oscillating of the cork 8) If A and B were both oscillating, there would be destructive interference and to a magnitude creating no energy flow
