1 Outline 7 Mechanical Senses: Audition and Somatosensation I. AUDITION If a tree falls in the woods. ..? A. Sound= periodic compressions of air, water and other media -sounds vary in (1) amplitude (intensity) Loudness = the perception of intensity and (2) frequency Pitch = the perception of frequency -Aging and loss of sound perception- Major and continuous loss in the ability to hear sounds of high pitch (range of audible sounds = 15Hz to 20,000 Hz. We lose about 160Hz per year beginning in middle age) B. How Sound is Received by the Ear vibrations-> tympanic membrane (" eardrum ") -> ossicles ( ) -> oval window The net effect of this sequence is to enhance the pressure of the sound wave -> oval window-> cochlea

2 The cochlea is a fluid filled tube containing the organ of Corti which has a basal membrane lined with hair cells and a tectorial membrane resting on top of the "hairs" of the cells ***Displacement of hair cells by vibrations causes action potential firing in the auditory nerve C. How Sound is Coded by the ear -Different frequencies of sound stimulate hair cells at different positions on the basilar membrane -Cochlear implants rely on this
