Unformatted text preview: Peripheral Nervous System Consists of nerves; in the brain, collections of axons are called tracts and basically bundles of axons in the PNS are called nerves 3 sets of nerves that work together 1 st set of nerves: cranial nerves, all connected to the brain; spinal nerves that are connected to the spinal cord, and the autonomic nervous system: responsible for controlling most of your internal organs 12 pairs of cranial nerves: vaguely familiar with the names but dont expect you to know the numbers, but most of the names explain what they do and where theyre going 3 sensory pathways to the brain: olfactory, optic, and the vestibulocochlear As the name sounds, olfactory is related to scent so it communicates Optic: comes directly from back of eye/retina Vestibulocochlear - innervates the cochlea and responsible for balance; the vestibular part of your inner ear is responsible for balance; also related to hearing Those are all incoming pathways, also have some outgoing motor pathways In the eye you actually have 3 of those because eyes are especially complicated, and each cranial nerve connects to a different muscle that helps move your eye there are 3 of them and all control movement of eye: ocular motor, cochlear, and the abducens Spinal accessory nerve which conveys info to the spinal cord, and the hypoglossal: involved in things like swallowing and tongue movement 4 more nerves that have sensory AND motor functions: trigeminal (receives inputs to various parts of the brain but also sends motor output regarding...
