In the film, I Robot, humanity relies fundamentally on technology to regulate its daily life. In Chicago, the year 2035, robots make up over one fifth of the population, performing simple tasks such as cooking or complicated jobs such as manufacturing. The evolution of societies is directly proportional with its introductions of new technology, thus exemplifying the catalytic characteristic of technology. Although technology has proved useful, it has also resulted in harmful consequences. The advanced industrialization in I Robot eventually proves detrimental to its society. While the introduction of robots seemed advantageous, it nearly precipitates the downfall of human civilization. The film’s tribulations with robots are analogous to those of large corporate monopolies, such as Microsoft’s Windows operating system. Both became monopolies in each society and accordingly caused mass devastation. In many ways, I Robot mirrors the history of Microsoft’s operating system and exemplifies the negative ramifications of reliance on technology. I Robot’s society believes that robots are infallible due to the three laws that are integrated into each: 1. A robot may not harm a human being or, through inaction, allow a human being come to harm. 2. A robot must obey orders given to it by human beings, except where such orders would conflict with the First Law. 3. A robot must protect its own existence as long as such protection does not conflict with the First or Second Law.
