Chem 242a Homework I Name_________________________ 1 1. Methyl isocyanate is a very reactive molecule used in the production of pesticides and was involved in one of the worst industrial accidents in Bhopal, India. In 1984, introduction of water into a tank of methyl isocyanate started an exothermic reaction that vaporized the liquid methyl isocyanate. Approximately 200,000 people were exposed. While the numbers are disputed, between 1,000– 8,000 died directly from this release and the long-term health effects are only now being realized. Please provide a drawing of methyl isocyanate (CH 3 –N=C=O) containing the following four items: (a) An orbital representation of the molecule (b) Identify each orbital type (c) Show formal charges on carbon, nitrogen, and oxygen (d) Indicate each bond angle in a table An example drawing is provided for methane:
