November 17, 2008 Yong Choi Oxford Companion to Music: Sousa, John Philip (b Washington, DC, 6 Nov. 1854; d Reading, PA 6 March 1932) American composer and band master Studied singing and a wide range of instruments Became a competent violinist at a young age Director of the US Marine Band at 1880 Resigned in 1892 to form band of his own His band introduced polished ensemble music-making to an unusually wide audience  during his band’s four decades of world tour Best known for march: Melodic inventiveness, rhythmic vigour, an ear for harmonic surprise, and an  understanding of a wind band’s sound capabilities. Emphasizing changes of  theme, colour, texture, dynamics, and even key, they are in effect miniatures  for   large   ensemble   and   their   brief   time-span   is   animated   by   sharp,   bold  contrasts.
